Chapter Spotlight- Applied Technology Center (Rock Hill)

The Applied Technology Center (ATC) HOSA Chapter represents Northwestern, Rock Hill and South Pointe High Schools in Rock Hill, SC. The ATC HOSA group has 74 active members and growing. This summer President Miranda Hovis and Vice President Donovan Perryman challenged ATC HOSA members by taking part in the Lemons for Leukemia challenge. Videos of students taking the challenge were posted to Twitter and Facebook and Youtube. HOSA members are currently raising funds for the State Leadership Conference in 2016 by selling Country Meats (meat sticks) and also selling Sam’s Express Car Wash fund-raising cards. Students can’t wait for March to get here.ATC

Chapter Spotlight- Aiken County Career & Technology Center

ACCTC_911Aiken County Career & Technology Center HOSA Chapter

On September 11, 2015 the Aiken County Career Center HOSA planned and implemented an event for the National Day or Service and Remembrance.  We were joined by several organizations at the career center that assisted with coordinating this day: Fire and Emergency Management, Criminal Justice, AC3 Media (Media Technology), CAD (Computer Aided Drafting), Machine Tool and FCCLA (Fashion, Design & Apparel).

The HOSA students created two rose gardens with benches in the courtyard marked by plaques: one to remember all lives lost on September 11, 2001 and one to honor all our local First Responders.  The creation of the gardens was completed with assistance from a generous donation by SC HOSA, a Lowes Toolbox Grant and Cold Creek Nursery in Aiken, SC.

We were honored to have over fifty local Firemen, EMS and Public Safety to celebrate this day.   Bryson Fulmer, junior HOSA student welcomed the guests.  The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Color Guard posted the colors.  Yomalli Gaona, junior HOSA students lead the Pledge of Allegiance.  Ms. Ella Gardener, Medical Reserve Corp spoke, followed by Mr. Paul Matthews, Aiken Emergency Management.  A moment of Silence was held to remember the fallen.  During the Retiring of Colors, Taps was played followed by Amazing Grace on the bagpipes.  Our guests were invited to the multipurpose room for a small reception as members of FCCLA served.  All guests were given a 911 Memorial lapel pin.

The ACCTC HOSA students were honored to be a part of this Day of Service & Remembrance and are looking forward to how they can continue this event on an annual basis.

Chapter Spotlight- White Knoll High School

White Knoll High School HOSA Chapter delivered 9-11 remembrance/recognition pins to Lexington County Fire, Lexington County EMS, Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, and Lexington City Police on September 9, 2015.WKHS_911

Students and advisors hand delivered the pins to each office with a thank you note and an invitation to join us during a flag raising ceremony at school.  A representative of each division of Emergency Services attended our ceremony along with approximately 75 students and staff. Among those attendees, Major J. J. Jones from Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.  He was a part of the delegation from White Knoll Middle who delivered the firetruck to the New York City Fire Station after losing their truck and several members in the 9-11 attacks. Major Jones was very moved to see the generosity of White Knoll continue to serve and recognize emergencyresponders.

As part of education and remembrance, the school broadcasted historical information about the events of 9-11 and the activities WKHS HOSA planned.  We also had a HOSA meeting in which 1st Sgt. David Pelley reminded the members about the incredible community response from White Knoll and how it made national headlines in 2001 for the extraordinary efforts made by such a small community.

Pins were also distributed to each student and staff member who attended our flag raising service on the morning of 9-11.

Spotlight Chapter – Langley Bath Clearwater Middle School

The first meeting between the Aiken County Career and Technology Career Center HOSA and our newest middle school affiliate from Aiken County School District-Langley Bath Clearwater Middle School HOSA.  The senior HOSA students hosted the middle school group for a field trip on Friday March 27, 2015.  There were 23 middle school HOSA students along with their advisors, Dana Chipley and Elaine Smoak that spent over 2 hours with the ACCTC HOSA group.  The middle school students were engaged in many hands on activities that included:  first aid, vital signs, PPE’s, competitive events demonstration and preparation in CERT and Health Career Displays. This is the first of many joint events between the two groups.

Richland District One Regional Competition

On February 18, 2015,  Richland County School District One (Hopkins, SC) hosted their own SC HOSA District Competition prior to going to the 2015 SC HOSA State Leadership Conference. They also welcomed Hopkins Middle School, one of our first Middle Schools affiliated with HOSA.  Congratulations and good luck at the State Leadership Conference!
