Session: We all have our own story — stories of who we are, where we’ve been, and where we’d like to go. In this presentation, we will focus on how to write our story, moving into graduation, college, and career. How can you use your HOSA experience to pave a path to their “dream” — whether that dream centers around the career you look to build or the person you’d like to be.
Bio: As a 5-year HOSA member, Anna has been able to explore her interest in public health research and narrative in healthcare, pursuing a B.S.P.H in Nutrition Science & Research and Literature, Medicine, Culture Minor at the UNC Chapel Hill. Beyond honored to serve HOSA as its President-Elect, Anna believes in the power of connection and community.

Turning Grief into Hope
Session: I lost 2 sons to drug overdoses. When my youngest passed away in Jan 2022 it became my mission to speak to teens and parents about what my family and I went through in hopes of reaching someone who may be in need of hope and love. It’s an emotional story but I believe in the cause…I have shared at 40 schools in the last 10 months.
Bio: A sportswriter for 35 years. Lifelong resident of Lowcountry…also a volunteer baseball coach at Cane Bay high school…grandfather of 2…passionate about my mission.

Bio: CPT Jessica L. Sexton is a native of Portsmouth, Ohio. Joined the Military in 2005 enlisted. She commissioned and earned her BSN from University of Texas at El Paso, Texas in 2013. In addition to her bachelor’s degree, she earned her MSN degree, focusing on Leadership and Management from Western Governors University in 2018.

Mental Health – Everybody Has That!
Session: The presentation will be an overview of the current crisis in youth mental health and two of the programs that NAMI SC is presenting around South Carolina.
1) Ending the Silence – Learning the signs of mental health issues, who to contact, and what you can do.
2) Go Lime Green: Mental Health Matters – A rallying cry involving sporting events in middle and high schools about mental health leading to in school presentations on youth and mental health.
Bio: Parent of a son with mental illness.

Be the HERO of your Own Story!
Session: Everyone loves a HERO, and each of us must cultivate the mindsets and disciplines that allow us to thrive. This interactive presentation will utilize activities to challenge students to evaluate their personal approaches to reaching their goals. Students will explore their inherent strengths and what it means to have a strengths-based approach to completing tasks, collaborating on teams, and appreciating the diversity of others. Students will learn about the power of habits and hope and how they can internalize their locus of control to demonstrate resiliency in the pursuit of their goals. Finally, students will explore what it means to be the Hero of their individual story each chapter, each paragraph, each sentence, each word and come away with a take home strategies to contribute to their success.
Bio: Michelle Futrell currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Professional Studies & Continuing Education at the College of Charleston. She holds a BA from the College of Charleston and an MA from the University of North Carolina. Ms. Futrell is a certified athletic trainer and Gallup certified Strength Coach and Strengths-Based Education Facilitator

Advances in Forensic Science
Session: This presentation will detail the use of chemistry and biology to solve previously unsolvable cold-cases.
Bio: Dr. Steve Lambert is the director of the Forensic Chemistry and Forensic Biology programs at Newberry College. He teaches crime scene processing, evidence collection and forensic analysis, along with biochemistry and nursing chemistry. Dr. Lambert is retired from the Forensic DNA Laboratory of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) in SC

Session: Medical career in the blood banking industry. Our presentation will spotlight the different career opportunities and paths in the blood banking industry. As I go over the obvious of the blood donor and their importance to our future, also how we need all different types of young adults with a medical background in order for us to be successful.
Bio: Terra came to The Blood Connection straight out of college with the thought of it being a temporary job. She fell in love with TBC mission and what they did for the community. She started out in the recruitment department as an onsite recruiter which grew into her, now 17 year career with TBC. Terra has worn many hats but the one she is most proud of is saving lives.

Pharmacy: More than Just Counting Pills!
Session: So you want to be a doctor? Pharmacists are doctors who specialize in medication to enhance patient care and promote wellness. You may think pharmacists only work in places like CVS and Walgreens, but with over 100 different pharmacy career paths to choose from, pharmacists work in many different practice settings and do much more than just counting pills! Pharmacists interact directly with patients, go on hospital rounds with other healthcare professionals, research and develop groundbreaking new drugs, work with animals of all shapes and sizes, and more!
The MUSC College of Pharmacy has been educating outstanding pharmacists for over 100 years. We are dedicated to helping the next generation of pharmacists find their passion, whether that be veterinary pharmacy or nuclear pharmacy.
Bio: Madison Riley is the Marketing and Student Recruitment Specialist for the Medical University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, MUSC has a rich tradition of educating outstanding pharmacists and is the state’s only comprehensive academic health sciences center.

Live Diagnosis of a Patient in The Developing World
Session: Leadership Initiatives holds two Medical Internships, one focusing on public health in the developing world and the second on neuroscience, every summer in conjunction with Georgetown University. During this workshop, HOSA students will experience an in-time real-life diagnosis of a patient in our partnered hospital in Bauchi State, Nigeria. This unique opportunity is made possible for every student of our Advanced Medical & Public Health Internship during the summer.
Bio: Leadership Initiatives was created to empower men, women, and children around the world to determine their own futures, and to help break the cycles of poverty and dissatisfaction that plague so many communities worldwide.

Becoming the Match
Session: August 2021, Emily received a phone call she never thought would come. Emily had just matched a 64-year-old who was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer and needed a new immune system. Without any hesitation she said yes. By December, Emily was on her way to Seattle. Fascinated by the human body and its ability to give to others, Emily is sharing her story and what it takes to become a bone marrow donor.
Bio: Born and raised in Summerville, SC, Emily Hathcock is a senior at Wofford College studying biology and applying to public health school to study health policy. Emily has been a huge advocate of HOSA since her freshman year of high school and has since served as SC HOSA Vice President and HOSA International PS/C Vice President.

Bio: Al Squire is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati – College of Business Administration Executive Program. He received his Master of Science in Higher Education from Eastern Illinois University. Al serves as the Executive Director of the Prisma Health Medical Experience “MedEx” Academy and pipeline programs.
