Center
E-mail:

Hello South Carolina
HOSA! Allow us to introduce to you, Mattison Wilbanks your SC HOSA State
President. Mattison has been involved in HOSA for a year. This past
year, he attended the 2009 SC HOSA Fall Leadership Conference at Newbery
College. In March, Mattison participated in the annual state leadership
conference (SLC) in North Charleston. It was a learning experience for
him to compete in the CPR/First Aid event and to run for state office.
His team did not place, but this just means that they will practice and
prepare even more this year, so that they can take first place at the
2011 SC HOSA SLC!
Moving slow was not in
Mattison’s HOSA vocabulary…having won the presidential election as a
rising junior! The 2010 HOSA National Leadership Conference in Orlando,
Florida was the highlight of his HOSA year. The state officer team
attended HOSA 301; this dynamic leadership training is for state
officers from across the nation to equip with the skills to lead our
state. Mattison Wilbanks hopes you will help us meet our membership goal
of 4,000 SC HOSA members this year. The state officer team looks forward
to meeting you and your chapter members at upcoming HOSA events. Other
than HOSA at the Barnwell County Career Center, his is also involved in
the International Club at Barnwell High School. Mattison also plays high
school soccer for the Barnwell War Horses. |

schosatashara@yahoo.com
Ta'Shara Davis joined
her local HOSA chapter at Lower Richland High School (LRHS) in 2008. In
2009, she was elected Vice-President of the LRHS HOSA chapter. At the
2010 SC HOSA State Leadership Conference (SLC) in North Charleston, she
competed in the Job Seeking Skills competitive event where she won first
place! Also at the SLC, with the help of her local chapter advisor,
Twanda Addison and the support of her Health Science 2 classmates and
HOSA members, Ta'Shara had the opportunity to run for South Carolina
HOSA Postsecondary Vice President. She was successful in her election
bid and will now have many opportunities to represent SC HOSA on the
state and nation levels.
While attending high
school, Ta’Shara Davis obtained her certification as a nursing
assistant. Now as a college freshman, she attends the University of
South Carolina Aiken as a South Carolina Life Scholar. Ta'Shara is a
pre-nursing major, and plans to apply for the upper division of the
college of nursing in the following year. Ta'Shara will like to thank
God, her family, advisors and peers for their dedication and support;
and most of all HOSA for assisting her to continue her education in the
wonderful world of healthcare. |

Secretary
Jay Hartley
Gilbert High School
E-mail:
schosajay@yahoo.com
Jay Hartley is our
South Carolina HOSA State Secretary. He is a junior at Gilbert High
School, and has been passionately involved in HOSA for three years. He
served as a 9th and 10th Grade HOSA Representative
at Gilbert High School. He attended 2009 SC HOSA Fall Leadership
Conference his sophomore year. Jay participated in the annual state
leadership conferences, his freshman and sophomore years. In June, he
also attended the 2010 HOSA National Leadership Conference in Orlando,
Florida.
At the 2009 and 2010
HOSA State Leadership Conferences, as a freshman and sophomore, Jay
competed in the Public Service Announcement competitive event. His team
won first place both years. At national conference, his team did not
place in the top ten, so this gives them a goal to work toward for the
2011 competitive events program. At his high school, Jay is also a
member of various clubs and organizations including the Student Council
where he serves as the Student Body Secretary, the BETA Club where he
serves as a representative and the Lexington One Community Coalition
Club where I also serve as a Junior Representative. His career goal is
to become an anesthesiologist. Upon my gradation from Gilbert High
School, he would like to either attend Duke University or the University
of South Carolina to study biology. Jay looks forward to serving you as
a member of the SC HOSA state officer team. |

Reporter/Photographer
Justin McDuffie
Spring Valley High School
E-mail:
schosajustin@yahoo.com
Justin McDuffie is a
rising senior at Spring Valley High School and a member of HOSA for the
last four years. At Spring Valley High School, he has served as chapter
parliamentarian. He also served a previous term as South Carolina
Reporter/Photographer. Justin sees a leader is as one who serves rather
than one served by others. Through his work with HOSA, Justin has
developed into a leader of service and action. To Justin the words of
John Quincy Adams hold true, “If your actions inspire others to, dream
more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.”
Justin enjoys a
challenge as evident by his successes in the Creative Problem Solving
competitive event. He and his team have won the gold at the State
Leadership Conference for the past three years. Justin’s team has
enjoyed national success; securing a fifth place finish in 2008 and a
third place medal in 2010. Justin has also seen success at the state
level in 2008 and 2009 as a Kaiser Permanente Health Care Issues Exam
finalist. In 2010, Justin received national recognition for his
community service involvement and was presented the bronze level of the
Barbra James Service Award. In the fall of 2009, Justin attended the 3rd
Annual HOSA Washington Leadership Academy.
Justin is also a member
of his high school’s lacrosse team, the yearbook staff and Student
Council. In addition, Justin has served as Freshman Class President,
Sophomore Class President and Senate Vice-President.
Justin is currently
enrolled in a gerontology program and is continuing to explore his vast
career interests. Justin hopes to combine his interest in politics,
journalism, education and concern for children to improve healthcare for
the future. |
